Long Weekend Ride/Sympathy

I just returned from a long weekend's ride. The weekend was lazy and chilly (Heated hand-grips are worth their weight!). I looked at a few houses up north. Just speculating. This afternoon when I got back, I hung my Aerostitch suit up in the closet and noticed that two of Alison's purses were hanging behind where I usually hang the suit, and I hadn't noticed before. I took the purses down and cleaned them out.

Inside one of them I found a notebook that she kept. At the turn of 2008, she started writing notes about what we did together. I didn't know that. So I read them all. It's hard to tear up to such good memories; and hard to handle the fact that I would not have remembered most of them if her notes didn't catalogue them so well. They make me feel like I dilly-dallied through life when I should have been chronicling. I should have been writing in moments SHE wasn't looking, so I'd never forget.

So for weeks now I've navigated through Alison's "To The Moon" in order to visit everyone's blogs, and it's started wearing on me that there has been no change. So I put a page of the notes on there. Being her words, and her handwriting, they're intriguing and entertaining, comforting and therapeutic. I'll put some more up in the coming days. How exciting to be checking hers again!

  1. Tom-

Handwriting is comforting, indeed. Last week my sister found a recipe our mother had written, so she photocopied it and sent it to me. I have a birthday greeting she wrote, and I take it out every year on my birthday and read it again.

There are footprints of all kinds, and we find them when we need them most.

The journey out of sorrow is like a jagged line, but the slope is positive.

I wish you love and hugs

  2. Thanks for sharing the notes. It's funny she mentioned Sonic in there. I gathered that she loved Sonic! When she made the baby gifts for me, I wanted to send her a Sonic gift card as well but couldn't find one near us. Of course, now they just opened one very close. As soon as I saw it was a Sonic, I thought of her. Matt & I went there yesterday and ,of course, I thought of her. I feel like I knew her so well just to turn around and think I didn't really know her at all. It's only because she opened her life to all of us that I feel that. And you too! Thanks for allowing all of us in.

  3. She was always so good at giving and writing little notes. It's funny because I can see her hand writing in my head when I close my eyes.

  4. I am a firm believer that there is no thing as chance. Those purses hanging there, you going through them. God is leaving you signs that you are still so loved and she is OK. What a gift.
She told me she was journaling in a note book that was in her purse. I totally forgot. I now have a smile on my face but a tear rolls down my cheek. Such a sweet gift. I am sure it was bittersweet but I hope in the days and months ahead you will continue to find more surprises but the joy will overshadow the sadness.

Thanks for updating her blog. Seeing her handwriting again made me so happy. I ran across the butterfly book that Ali bought the girls for their first brithday. She wrote on the back. It brought back good memories but I still felt that twinge and lump in my throat.

Glad you got a little road trip! Maybe looking at houses might be good. I can see how you might want to do that in the future. Whatever you decide it will be the right decision at the right time. We are here for ya!

  6. We found several notebooks that my Grandma had copied the entire New Testament in her neat, tidy handwriting about 50-60 yrs. ago. I get to keep them. What a treasure!
